SMK Negeri 6 Surakarta embraces Informal Digital Learning of English (IDLE). We are excited to announce that SMK Negeri 6 Surakarta has integrated Informal Digital Learning of English (IDLE) into our school curriculum and after-school program. This initiative will be implemented regularly to enhance our students’ English language skills through innovative and engaging digital methods.

By adopting IDLE, we aim to provide our students with a dynamic and flexible learning environment that goes beyond traditional classroom settings, fostering a love for learning and preparing them for future success. We look forward to seeing the positive impact of this program on our students’ language development and overall academic growth.

As one of pilot project schools, SMK Negeri 6 Surakarta welcomed a visit from Professor Ju Seong Lee of the Education University of Hong Kong and a team of postgraduate students from UNS English department on Friday, October 18th, 2024. The purpose of this visit was to observe English learning in the X DKV 2 class, where the Informal Digital Learning of English (IDLE) concept is being applied.

IDLE, which stands for Informal Digital Learning of English, is an innovative approach to English language learning that allows students access to diverse learning resources anytime and anywhere. With internet connectivity, students can explore videos, articles, podcasts, and other content that supports their English language development. They can choose their materials, set their own learning pace, and select methods that match their needs and interests. IDLE also offers learners the flexibility to study at times that fit their schedules and to adapt the content and methods to suit their unique learning styles—whether by watching videos, reading articles, listening to podcasts, and more.

The visit began with a warm welcome from the school principal, Dr. Dwi Titik Irdiyanti, S.Si., M.Pd., who expressed appreciation for Professor Ju Seong Lee’s visit and her hopes for advancements in the school’s learning programs. English teachers who have been central in implementing IDLE also had the opportunity to discuss their experiences and teaching strategies with the professor.

During the observation, Professor Ju Seong Lee and the UNS team observed how IDLE was incorporated into learning activities in the X DKV 2. The students were visibly enthusiastic about engaging in lessons that integrate digital technology, such as using educational videos, the ClassPoint platform, and practicing speaking skills.

The implementation of IDLE as an English learning method empowers students to study independently outside the classroom, enriching their language skills through digital resources.

Through IDLE, the students gain a more dynamic and flexible learning experiences, going beyond the traditional classroom setting, which increases more motivation for learning and preparation better for the future.

As part of the school curriculum and extracurricular programs, IDLE has been implemented regularly to help students improve their English skills through creative and engaging digital methods.

We look forward to the positive impact of this program on our students’ language development and academic achievements. Best wishes for IDLE success!
