Today is marked as a special moment for the 11th-grade DKV 1 class, especially for me as an educator who always strives to provide the best learning experiences for students, due to the visit from Prof. Ju Seong Lee’s team from The Education University of Hong Kong. The visit was welcomed by Mr. Abdul Muslim, SPd, the vice principal representing the Principal of SMK N 6 Surakarta, Mrs. Dr. Dwi Titik Irdiyanti, S.Si., M.Pd. who was attending one important event.

The visitor team were Ms. Lai Wan Yee Winsy and Ms. Pan Xinwei from the Institution of The Education University of Hong Kong, doctoral students specializing in technology-based English language learning and teaching, particularly in the field of Artificial Intelligence and informal digital learning.

They were accompanied by Ms. Agustina Tyarakanita from the Graduate School of Universitas Negeri Malang, a doctoral student specializing in teacher professional development, educational technology, English language teaching and learning, and multimodality; and Ms. Aura Dewi Nurachmandani from Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta, a graduate in public health with expertise in health counseling, basic community health screenings, and direct health data collection (door-to-door/gathering).

During the occasion, the students appeared enthusiastic and excited to have them in the class. They proudly participated in the learning activities, engaging actively and eagerly. The learning, which integrated IDLE (Informal Digital Learning of English) and AI (Artificial Intelligence) : Moodei.ai, began with an introductory activity followed by an opportunity for students to watch a YouTube video about one topic. The teacher, together with all the students, engaged in a discussion about the topic, using both verbal discussion and the Padlet feature, where students wrote their responses to the teacher’s questions in the available Padlet columns. Afterward, the teacher provided a review of Exposition text material using the Kahoot feature to assess how well students understood it. Then, the students were divided into groups of 3-4 and asked to discuss and create an exposition text. The students confidently did their works in Canva, explaining the concepts they had learned in an interactive way.

After the learning session ended, the observation team provided very positive feedback. They highlighted how the methods used helped increase student participation, build their confidence, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration. Finally the students would practice their speaking. Finally, the students would do an assignment to practice their speaking skills using the Moodei.ai application to assess their speaking abilities and the performance evaluation results from it.

Today visit was not just an evaluation but also an opportunity to share inspiration and motivation for all of us.

Hopefully innovations such as IDLE and AI: moodei.ai in education continue to develop. With creative and interactive approaches, we can create a generation of  English learners who are ready to face the future.

Thank you to the team for visiting SMK 6 Surakarta, including Wijang library as an additional curiousity about the school.
